A Disturbing Trend in Ghanaian Football

Share

In a troubling incident that has cast a shadow over Ghanaian football, the General Manager of Elmina Sharks, Kelvin Aboagye, has been arrested following an assault on referee Eso Doh Morrison. The attack occurred on February 16, 2025, during a Division One League match between Elmina Sharks and Swedru All Blacks at the Nduom Sports Stadium in Elmina.

The confrontation erupted after referee Morrison awarded a penalty to Swedru All Blacks, a decision that incited immediate outrage among Elmina Sharks’ players, officials, and supporters. The situation escalated post-match when a group, including Aboagye, allegedly attacked the referee and some supporters. Aboagye is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations, while efforts are underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in the assault.

Disturbingly, footage from the incident shows Elmina Sharks player Jay Asamoah Kola attempting to strike referee Morrison with a stone. Fortunately, swift intervention by bystanders and a police officer prevented the attack from causing serious harm. In response, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has charged Kola with misconduct under Section 13(1)(k) of the GFA Disciplinary Code, and he has been given until February 18, 2025, to respond to the charges.

This incident highlights a concerning pattern of violence in Ghanaian football. On the same day, Asante Kotoko mourned the death of a fan, Francis Yaw “Pooley” Frimpong, who was fatally stabbed during a clash with Nsoatreman at Nsoatre. These events underscore the urgent need for stringent measures to curb hooliganism and ensure the safety of all participants in the sport.

The GFA and law enforcement agencies are expected to collaborate closely to address this issue decisively. Implementing stricter security protocols, enforcing severe penalties for violent conduct, and promoting a culture of respect and sportsmanship are essential steps toward safeguarding the integrity of Ghanaian football.

As investigations continue, the football community and stakeholders must reflect on these incidents and work collectively to prevent such occurrences in the future, ensuring that the beautiful game remains a source of unity and joy for all.
