Ghana’s immediate past Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul
Ghana’s immediate past Minister of Defence, Dominic Nitiwul, has disclosed that a group of individuals attempted to overthrow the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government in 2019.
Speaking in an interview on Asempa TV on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Nitiwul claimed the group was closely monitored by the country’s security officials for a year, with their plans ultimately thwarted.
He made these comments while addressing the idea that Ghana is immune from military coups, stating that those who believe such a thing are unaware of the events happening behind the scenes.
“They don’t know what is going on. Let me inform you. In 2019, I watched people planning… We set up people; they followed them for one year. They recorded them for one full year, planning,” he stated in Twi.
Nitiwul disclosed that the group had procured grenades and intended to cause chaos by bombing key locations in the country to make it ungovernable.
He emphasised that coups, while not inevitable, remain a possibility, as proved by similar events in neighbouring countries.
However, he emphasised the importance of having a loyal and dedicated armed forces to prevent such situations.
“There are so many things that can happen. What is important is that you should have a loyal, dedicated armed force that would stand and fight for the country, regardless of whoever comes,” he added.
While it is unclear if Nitiwul was referring to the recent case of six individuals convicted of plotting a coup in 2024, his statements have highlighted the importance of vigilance and loyalty within the country’s armed forces.
