The engagement marks a significant step towards strengthening STEM and TVET education
The Women in Engineering (WIE) wing of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH) has paid a courtesy visit to Her Excellency Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, Vice President of the Republic of Ghana.
The delegation, led by WIE Chairlady Engr. Mrs. Adjoa Agyinba T. Gyamera, extended their congratulations to the Vice President on her historic ascension to the second-highest office in the country and explored collaborative efforts to promote STEM and TVET education among young girls.
During the meeting, Engr. Gyamera commended Vice President Opoku Agyeman for breaking barriers for women in leadership, noting that her achievement serves as a beacon of inspiration for young girls nationwide.
She highlighted WIE’s flagship mentorship program, “Catch Them Young,” which engages students in Basic and Senior High Schools to foster interest in STEM and TVET careers.
Additionally, she noted that IET-GH provides scholarships to brilliant but underprivileged girls in tertiary education and appealed for the Vice President’s support to expand the initiative.
In response, Vice President Opoku Agyeman praised IET-WIE for their contributions to STEM education and emphasized the need for innovative approaches to teaching science and mathematics.
She suggested refining teaching methodologies and incorporating local languages to make these subjects more accessible, citing successful models in countries such as Japan, China, and Malaysia.
The Vice President also underscored the importance of recognizing engineering principles in everyday activities, such as fish smoking and soap-making, and promoting sustainability through biodegradation plastics and effective waste management.
She encouraged IET-WIE to actively participate in the upcoming National Apprenticeship Program proposed by President John Mahama and pledged her full support in advancing their mentorship and scholarship programs.
As part of the engagement, the IET-WIE Chairlady formally invited the Vice President to their upcoming International Conference in October, where she is expected to be a Special Guest Speaker.
The meeting was attended by key executives of IET-GH, including Engr. Henry Kwadwo Boateng (President of IET-GH), Engr. Seth Ayim (Executive Director), and other notable members such as Engr. Dr. Gyamera (Southern Sector Executive Member), Engr. Madina Seidu Adams (Vice Chair), Engr. Matilda Adane Okrah (Secretary), Engr. Delight Edem Norshie (Organizing Secretary), Engr. Anna Mensima Athur (Treasurer), and Engr. Dr. Miriam Eduful (Founding Chair).
