Former Black Stars midfielder Yussif Chibsah has provided some insights into the salary scales of players within the Ghana Premier League.
As the head of player relations at the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), Chibsah has brought attention to the significant disparity in earnings across the league. He noted that some players earn as little as GHC 400 per month, a figure that underscores the financial challenges faced by many in the league.
Chibsah, whose playing career included stints at King Faisal and Kotoko, highlighted that on the higher end of the salary spectrum, clubs like the Porcupine Warriors and Hearts of Oak have set benchmarks, with top salaries reaching up to GHC 18000 or occasionally even GHC 21000. He commended these leading clubs for their commitment to compensating their players better, suggesting that such financial incentives might help retain talent within the local league.
While speaking to Sporty FM, Chibsah remarked on the reluctance to publicly disclose specific salary figures but emphasized the considerable range, from the very modest to the more competitive pay rates. He praised clubs such as Hearts of Oak, Kotoko, and Medeama for approaching this issue with a focus on improvement.
The inadequate remuneration in the league has led to a drain of top players, who often migrate in search of more lucrative opportunities elsewhere. Currently, the Ghana Premier League is on a temporary hiatus, following the tragic death of Asante Kotoko supporter Francis Yaw Frimpong, who was affectionately known as Nana Pooley. This pause also provides an opportunity for stakeholders to reflect on the league’s challenges, including financial sustainability and player welfare.
