General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has dismissed rumours of uneasiness within the party.

His comments follow a recent publication by The Chronicle newspaper, which claimed that the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, had reported President and party leader John Dramani Mahama to the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) for refusing to appoint individuals from a list Nketiah had presented.

According to the newspaper, sources within the party’s FEC confirmed that Asiedu Nketiah was unhappy with the president’s decision, creating tension within the party.

However, speaking on the issue with Accra-based TV3, Fifi Kwetey dismissed the claims as false and urged the public to disregard them.

He asserted that there was no tension within the party and explained that such situations are normal in politics.

He also noted that competition for positions is common, and when individuals do not receive the appointments they desire, it is natural for them to feel disappointed.

“There is no tension. These things are normal. People are always looking for positions, and when someone doesn’t get a position, naturally, they may feel unhappy. So you hear claims that there’s tension. The fact is, you can never have 100% agreement on everything in government, it’s just not possible. Even the president himself may not always be able to place every single person he originally wanted in a particular position,” he explained.

Fifi Kwetey further disclosed that some individuals currently holding government appointments were not initially considered for those roles.

However, due to ongoing discussions and changes, they were eventually appointed.

“There are instances where the president may want to appoint someone, but after extensive discussions, he reconsiders his initial decision. In fact, some individuals who are serving as ministers today were not originally meant for those positions, but after further deliberations, adjustments were made. It’s always a process of give and take,” he added.

He reiterated that the speculation about internal conflicts within the NDC is largely fueled by disgruntled individuals because they did not receive the appointments they had hoped for.

“Some of these speculations come from people who are unhappy because they wanted certain positions but didn’t get them. That’s just part of governance,” the NDC General Secretary concluded.
