The Kusaug Youth Movement (KYM) has condemned what it describes as a “military-aided slaughter” at Bawku, an area that has been embroiled in longstanding conflict, stressing the need for immediate action from the government to restore peace in the area.
In a statement issued, the Movement, on February 10, 2025, it alleged that a woman and her two children were murdered at Tensungo, a suburb of Bawku, under circumstances the group claims were facilitated by military personnel.
“A gruesome murder of two children and their mother was carried out by the war-mongering Bawku Mamprusi settlers during curfew hours. It is common knowledge in Bawku that everyone is vigilant and watch over their territories both day and night. As a result, no armed men can beseech any community and cause mayhem with impunity. The Mamprusi bandits knowing this, planned with the military to invade the said community,” it alleged.
It further accused the military of engaging in corrupt practices, alleging that weapons and ammunition are being smuggled into Bawku under military escort, with personnel receiving financial incentives for their involvement.
“The wages derived from these acts are now almost more than their monthly salaries. The secret reason why military personnel are bent on escorts at the expense of their mandated duties in protecting lives and property,” it added.
The group called for a complete overhaul of the current military detachment at Bawku.
“They have outlived their usefulness in Bawku. They have no moral courage and integrity in them to enforce the laws any longer,” the statement added.
The KYM also criticised both the current and previous governments for failing to enforce the law in Bawku, despite acknowledging that the conflict is criminal, rather than chieftaincy related.
“Is there anything at all to be negotiated at the Asantehene’s Palace now? Criminality is criminality. It is non-negotiable. It’s the responsibility of the police and other law enforcement agencies to deal with criminals and criminality acts and not the Asantehene,” it noted.
It urged the government to take immediate action to restore peace in the area.
“Every minute of postponement, causes life. If there should be any negotiations or dialogue at all, the criminal aspect should be dealt with first,” it added.
