A protest at Nakpanduri, in the Bunkpurugu Constituency in the North East Region, turned violent as youth leaders from various groups led an angry demonstration over the recent ministerial appointments made by President John Dramani Mahama.
The protest, initially planned to express dissatisfaction with the exclusion of the constituency in the latest appointments, escalated when demonstrators burned car tyres and tore down NDC pavilions in the town.
The youth leaders, including persons identified as Peter Laar, Lambon Francis Yennebe, Konpetik Benjamin, Kombian Babotin, and Johnson Tankoruk, voiced their frustration at what they say is the party’s disregard for Bunkpurugu’s loyal support.
Despite the constituency’s consistent backing of the NDC, especially since the return to constitutional rule in 1992, residents claim they have seen little in terms of development, including poor road conditions, limited access to clean water, and inadequate educational facilities.
“Bunkpurugu has been a consistent stronghold for the NDC. We’ve supported the party even in difficult times. Yet, when it comes to ministerial appointments, we’ve been overlooked. Hon. Dr. Abed-Nego Azumah Bandim, our MP, deserves to be rewarded for his hard work and leadership. He has earned a deputy ministerial role,” Peter Laar, one of the protest organisers, said.
Dr. Abed Bandim, who won the Bunkpurugu parliamentary seat in 2020 and 2024, despite minimal resources, has been widely praised for his resilience and leadership.
His victories over well-resourced NPP candidates, including then Regional Minister, Solomon Namliit Boar, have further bolstered his reputation.
Many constituents believe his consistent electoral success reflects his capability to serve at a higher level in government.
Lambon Francis Yennebe, another protest leader, stressed the need for better representation.
“Our people are suffering. It’s time for change, for better leadership that prioritises our needs. Dr Bandim deserves to be at the table to fight for our community’s development,” he also said.
The protest took a dramatic turn when demonstrators, frustrated by what they saw as a betrayal, turned their attention to the NDC’s pavilions.
The structure, representing the party’s presence in Nakpanduri, was demolished by the protesters as a symbolic gesture of defiance and frustration.
Eyewitnesses reported chants calling for justice and better representation for Bunkpurugu. Local authorities arrived at the scene to restore order, with no injuries reported.
Demonstrators vowed to continue their actions until their demands are met.
The NDC leadership at Bunkpurugu has already made public calls for Dr. Bandim’s appointment as a deputy minister, arguing that his leadership and influence would be instrumental in addressing the region’s development challenges.
They point to the constituency’s longstanding loyalty and the proven leadership of Dr. Bandim as key factors that should be recognized.
“We have worked tirelessly to support the NDC, and now it’s time for the party to show its appreciation. A Deputy Ministerial position for Hon. Bandim would not only reward his efforts but also bring much-needed development to Bunkpurugu,” Konpetik Benjamin, another leader of the protest, said.
