Ghana urged to diversify exports
Rosa Liliana Gómez Cárdenas de Weston, the Ambassador of Peru to Ghana, says for developing countries like Peru and Ghana, there is a need to diversify exports and seek new trading partners.
She said this quest should force both countries to look towards regions with high growth potential, such as Africa and Latin America.
Madam Cárdenas de Weston was speaking at the “Time with the Ambassadors “Series organized by the Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) in Accra.
The Series is a key initiative by GNCCI aimed at advancing industrial and commercial interests within Ghana and beyond.
The Ambassador said developing countries could not depend on a few trading partners or traditional products.
“It is essential to diversify our exports to generate value-added, attract investment and reduce vulnerability to fluctuations in global demand,” she added.
She said Ghana with its dynamic economy and growing middle class was an attractive destination for Peruvian products such as agribusiness, textiles, food technology and renewable energy.
The Ambassador said in recent years, trade between both countries had shown sustained although modest growth.
She said the trade balance was still limited but with great prospects for expansion.
“Peruvian products such as pisco, superfoods (quinoa, maca, chia), fishery products and manufactured goods have a niche in the Ghanaian market. In turn, Ghanaian products may find greater opportunities in Peru,” she added.
Stephane Abass Miezan, the President of GNCCI, said Peru was one of the few countries in the world, which has preserved till date its rich ancient history.
He said one could not talk about Peru without mentioning its ancient Inca ruins, particularly Machu Picchu, the Nazca Lines and the beautiful landscapes of the Andes mountains.
He said Ghana and Peru have had diplomatic relations since 1987, and in 2014, Peru opened its embassy in Accra, further solidifying its relationship.
He said the embassy since its establishment had played a critical role in promoting trade, cultural exchange, and cooperation between our two nations.
The President said in 2024, Ghana and Peru signed a significant agreement on political consultations, aimed at strengthening ties through continued political exchanges and mutual consultations.
“Today, therefore, marks another important step in expanding the recent development into the area of trade and economic relations which has been significantly low,” he added.
