Manchester United defender Leny Yoro has given an insight on what it is like working with head coach Ruben Amorim.
Leny Yoro had an unfortunate start to life as a Manchester United player. Signed from Lille in July 2024, the centre-back suffered an injury in pre-season that required surgery.
Yoro, 19, never got to play a competitive game under Erik ten Hag, the manager who signed him.
Ten Hag was sacked and replaced with Ruben Amorim, with Yoro fit again just as the Portuguese boss took over.
Leny Yoro speaks to Rio Ferdinand
Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has acted as a mentor of sorts to Leny Yoro ever since his arrival.
Yoro received messages from Ferdinand before committing his future to United, while just days ago, the ex-United captain has spoken of his admiration for the rising star.
And just this week, to underline the relations between the pair, Yoro appeared as a guest on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel.
The Frenchman was quizzed about playing under Ruben Amorim, and appreciates his inter-personal skills.
Yoro said: “I spoke a lot with him, I had a good relation with Erik ten Hag, I have a good relation with Amorim, so I just try to do what he ask me to do.
“He is a lot on inter-communication between the players, he played on the top level, he knows if you are not playing, or you have bad games, he knows how to speak with you, it’s very important for me.
“We talk about football and tactical, but also outside the pitch. He is very tight on this. To win games, to win trophies, outside the pitch you need to be mature.”
Amorim has been a good communicator in press conferences and you can see how he could be popular with the players.
And yet Yoro is keen to stress he is the very opposite of an easy task-master, insisting that the head coach’s desire to drive up standards is pushing the players.
He says: “The training is very hard, it’s important for me, for him the training is very important, you play like you train.
“It is very important to be good in training. If you are not hard working, if you are lazy in training, he not like you, he will kill you. It’s normal, you play like you train.”
Amorim has already stressed repeatedly that training performances are important for him, and Yoro’s comments serve to underline it.
Yoro praises Bruno Fernandes
Leny Yoro also took time to praise Manchester United’s captain, Portuguese star Bruno Fernandes.
He explained: “Bruno is a guy speaks with everyone, before the games, doing a speech, as a captain. He is really a technical leader.”
Fernandes leads by example too, with nine goals and 12 assists to his name in 2024/25 to date.
