President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery in the country and implementing measures aimed at reducing the high cost of treating chronic diseases.

According to a report by citinewsroom.com, he made these remarks during his ‘Thank You Tour’ of the Central Region on February 6, 2025.

Mahama outlined plans to launch the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, to support individuals battling chronic illnesses, such as kidney and liver disease, high blood pressure, and cardiac conditions.

“In healthcare, we will continue to improve our hospitals and all levels of our healthcare system. We will prioritise healthcare, and I will launch the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund to assist individuals with chronic diseases. This fund will help alleviate the cost of treatment,” he stated.

Mahama further announced his intention to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy to ensure that all proceeds are allocated to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

“We’re going to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme Levy so that the full amount goes to the National Health Insurance Authority. This will enable them to pay for facilities and treatments provided to individuals holding National Health Insurance cards,” he added.
