Staff of the Irrigation Company of Upper Region (ICOUR) in Navrongo have deflated the tires of the company’s official vehicle to prevent the former Managing Director, Dr. Benedict Bonaventure Aligebam, from taking the car, which he continued to possess after his retirement in 2024.
In an interview with TV3 on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Augustine Zoogah, the Secretary of the local union of GAWU, criticised the former managing director for his refusal to hand over the vehicle.
“This morning, we are here to inform the general public that going upon the letter that the state wrote that all government properties should be parked, we deem it fit that the ICOR vehicle, which is a government vehicle, should have also been packed. But Dr. Bonaventure Aligebam was still using it,” he noted.
Zoogah further explained that all efforts to reclaim the car had failed.
“The last time he came here, he was able to drive the car out. Today, we got intel that he’ll be coming. So, we’re waiting for him. Because the time he said he was coming, we were already at work. He came here around 10 o’clock.
“We told him that he is not above the law. Nobody in this country is above the law. He should let the law take its course,” he noted.
He added that Dr. Aligebam should not be using the vehicle anymore, as it was clear he no longer held the position.
“He should park the car. And then whatever it is, if he thinks that he has the right to use the car, he should pass through the right channel to come and pick the car. So, today when he came, we said no, enough is enough. We cannot be seen as people who don’t also know our left and right.
“We informed the police and the police came. We want to play with the police to drive the car to the police station and park for safekeeping”, he noted.
He reiterated that the vehicle should not return to Dr. Aligebam until the issue is fully resolved.
“And also, to make sure the car doesn’t get back to him to be using it until the issue is resolved permanently. And when the new managing director comes, the car will be handed over to the person to be used,” he added.
Dr. Aligebam retired in March 2024 but has refused to hand over despite several directives.
On October 24, 2024, members of the Tono Irrigation Farmers Association and the General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU), led by GAWU Chairman Adam Jibril, staged a demonstration through the principal streets of Navrongo to demand his removal.
