We won’t sit down for those with interests in leading NPP to use Dr. Bawumia as scapegoat

The former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, has warned certain party elements against attempting to blame the 2024 Presidential Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for their electoral defeat.

In a post on Facebook on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, Ofosu Nkansah attributed the smear campaign attempts to some faceless individuals within the party pursuing their own ambitions and personal interests in vying for leadership positions.

He accused these individuals of launching campaigns to tarnish Dr. Bawumia’s reputation and using him as a scapegoat to stir disaffection against him, among party members.

“We won’t sit down for those who have interest in leading the party to use Dr Bawumia as scapegoat because of their ambition,” he warned.

Expressing his disappointment, Ofosu Nkansah stated that the electoral results of their party were a direct reflection of their performance during the eight years of governance.

He argued that individuals at all levels of the party, from senior officials to appointees, whether directly or indirectly, could have played roles in the loss.

He criticised the targeted attempt to place the blame solely on the former vice president.

“The election was a referendum on our 8 years in power and some of our people decided not to vote for various reasons. From the President, Vice, Ministers, Board Chairs, CEOs, Appointees, and all those who had direct or indirect power or influence during the 8 years, we all may have done something which contributed to the defeat,” he stressed.

Ofosu Nkansah, a former appointee in the Akufo-Addo government, reiterated that such attempts to spread false narratives would not be tolerated and would be strongly resisted.

He called on the party to await the results of their internal investigations rather than placing blame on an individual.

“Some of us will not tolerate any agenda to push the blame from our 2024 defeat on the candidature of Dr Bawumia.

“We will resist any false narrative seeking to push the blame on Dr Bawumia. We should all respect ourselves and wait for the party to conduct full investigations into the cause of the defeat and not rush to blame one person,” he added.

His comments followed the reservations and sentiments expressed by a group called Concerned Traders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kumasi, who rejected any attempt to reintroduce Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s candidate.

The group attributed the party’s electoral loss to unpopular government decisions and what they described as the selection of the ‘wrong candidate’ in Dr. Bawumia.

“The assumption that Dr. Bawumia would secure the northern and Islamic votes did not materialize. Instead, the party suffered significant losses in these areas, eroding the gains the NPP had made since 1992. If the party truly wants to return to power in 2028, it must choose a candidate who is a living testimony of good leadership and sound economic policies,” the spokesperson for the group, Benjamin Ofori, is quoted as saying by 3news.com.
