In a remarkable show of humility and reconciliation, the Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has rendered an unconditional apology to the wife of the Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa. The apology follows controversial remarks made during a previous press conference that drew criticism from various quarters.

During the vetting process of Okudzeto Ablakwa on Friday, January 31, 2025, Afenyo-Markin took the opportunity to express his regret over how his statement was perceived, particularly by Ablakwa’s spouse.

“Let me unconditionally apologize to your wife for how my press statement conference came about. I mean, how she felt about it. I would feel bad if somebody said something about my own wife. And it’s fair, alright. These are not ego matters. So I’m sorry to your dear wife and how my press conference was carried out,” Afenyo-Markin stated.

He further extended his apology directly to Ablakwa, acknowledging that his intention was never to demean him.

“You felt I also say sorry to you. I would have the utmost respect for you. I will be the last person to run you down. Okay, so I’m sorry. And I’m sorry to your wife one more time. Is that okay? And it’s fair, alright. These are not ego matters.”

Afenyo-Markin’s public apology is seen as a rare yet significant moment in Ghana’s political landscape, where partisan tensions often lead to heated exchanges. His statement is likely to be interpreted as a call for greater civility in political discourse, especially in an era where personal attacks have become common in political debates.

The press conference that necessitated this apology had previously sparked outrage, with critics accusing the Minority Leader of making remarks that were perceived as unnecessary and damaging. While Afenyo-Markin did not specify the exact comments that caused distress, his apology signals an attempt to mend any unintended harm caused.

The exchange between the two politicians during the vetting session was received with applause from some committee members, who viewed it as a commendable gesture of maturity and leadership.
