The religious beliefs of the Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Effutu, became a major topic of discussion over the past week.
Afenyo-Markin, as he has done in the past, proudly professed that he is a Catholic and a member of the Freemason fraternity, sparking widespread public debate.
The Catholic Church in Ghana has since issued two statements addressing his assertion—one through the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and another through the Catholic Archdiocese of Accra both categorically stating that it is forbidden for Catholics to join the Freemason fraternity.
Amid these statements and counter-pronouncements, videos have emerged showing Afenyo-Markin proudly demonstrating his Catholic faith.
In the said videos, the Minority Leader is seen passionately singing Catholic hymns with all the vocal strength he could muster.
In one video, he is captured beautifully singing Catholic Hymnal 266, “Immortal, invisible, God only wise. In light inaccessible hid from our eyes. Most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days. Almighty, victorious, Thy great name we praise,” he sang.
In another video, the Minority Leader performed a heartfelt rendition of Catholic Hymnal 350 – ‘Guide Me, O You Great Redeemer’, “When I tread the verge of Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside. Death of death, and hell’s Destruction, land me safe on Canaan’s side. Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer, ever be my strength and shield, ever be my strength and shield,” he sang, to the amazement of the gathering.
