There are now just over 48 hours left in the winter transfer window and Chelsea still need to do several things.
It’s usually difficult for clubs to complete business in the January window, so let’s wait and see if Chelsea can enjoy a busy close to it. To add to the drama, the Blues host West Ham in the Premier League on Monday’s deadline day.
The Blues squad does look like it could do with one or two extra additions to help them in the second half of the season.
Chelsea’s decision to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan has worked well, but Enzo Maresca’s side need another lift after one win in their last seven league games.
In an ideal world, Chelsea will still complete a few more bits of transfer business in the next couple of days. We’ve taken a look at what a dream finish to the window would look like for them.
Chelsea need to sign a striker and recall midfielder
In terms of possible incomings, we’d love to see the Blues find a way to bring in a striker at the eleventh hour.
Chelsea are actively looking at centre-forwards, so can they find someone to join the attack? It would be great if a forward joins to lend a hand to Nicolas Jackson in the No.9 position.
At this stage, we’d take Brighton’s Evan Ferguson, 20, as a late option. Rumours earlier this week claimed that Chelsea have joined the race for Brighton striker Ferguson, who could be available on loan or permanently for £40m.
On top of another forward, the Blues would massively benefit from adding another option in central midfield.
We think the best way to do that would be by recalling Andrey Santos from his loan spell at sister club Strasbourg.
The 20-year-old box-to-box central midfielder has been immense for Strasbourg, even chipping in with eight goals in 19 appearances. His profile is exactly what’s needed to help out the Blues squad as the centre of the park looks a bit thin.
Chelsea plan to use Santos in the squad next season, so they should skip ahead and make it happen now.
Ben Chilwell deserves transfer exit
Hopefully, Ben Chilwell gets a move away from Chelsea because it would be cruel for him to spend another long spell watching on the sidelines.
The 28-year-old left-back clearly isn’t a part of Maresca’s first-team plans, making only one appearance this campaign. Therefore, it’s a no-brainer for the Englishman to move on, but they’re cutting it fine in the mid-season window.
It’s encouraging news that Crystal Palace have very recently made contact about Chelsea’s Chilwell as they attempt a late swoop to land him on loan for the rest of the season.
We understand why Maresca has acted the way he has with Chilwell, but it does feel harsh on the Champions League winner.
