MP Laadi Ayamba Defends “Bye-Bye” Sign-Off Amid Social Media Backlash

According to reports from GhanaWeb, the Member of Parliament for Pusiga, Laadi Ayii Ayamba, has confidently responded to social media critics who have taken issue with her use of “bye-bye” as a sign-off during the parliamentary vetting of ministerial nominees.

Ayamba stated that her signature phrase is meant “for the best.”

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) representative and member of the Appointments Committee faced online mockery for her tendency to congratulate nominees and conclude her statements with “bye-bye,” often without asking substantial questions.

Critics have claimed that she does not adequately assess the nominees, leading to the creation of memes and discussions about her effectiveness in this role.

During the vetting of Health Minister nominee Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Ayamba addressed the criticism directly.

“I will always congratulate my people. And when I say ‘bye-bye, bye-bye,’ it is for the best,” she asserted, eliciting laughter from her colleagues who are familiar with her style.

However, she diverged from her usual approach this time, questioning Akandoh about a significant issue: the backlog of 20,000 unemployed Allied Health nurses and 60,000 others awaiting posting.

After her inquiry, Ayamba concluded with congratulations but omitted her customary “bye-bye.”

In a playful response, her fellow MPs began to chant the phrase.

“The ‘bye-bye’ is worrying you!” she retorted, generating more laughter in the chamber.
