Ben Chilwell is fast running out of time if he’s to secure a move away from Chelsea in this window, but there’s just been a significant transfer update regarding him.
It’s been pretty clear from day one under head coach Enzo Maresca that Ben Chilwell won’t be an important part of his Chelsea squad.
As a result, the experienced 28-year-old defender has only played one game this season for the Blues, which was in the Carabao Cup against Barrow back in September. His exile from playing has extended to not featuring in a single matchday squad in the Premier League, too.
Maresca recently admitted he feels “shame” about his treatment of Chilwell, but the left-back doesn’t fit into his style of play. Incidentally, he shared that the Englishman continues to be professional and hard-working on the training pitch.
Transfer update on Ben Chilwell emerges
The January transfer window closes shut on Monday night, so let’s see if Chilwell can find an exit route.
Journalist Matt Law reports via X on Saturday morning that Premier League club Crystal Palace are keen on taking Chelsea’s Chilwell on loan. Apparently, the Eagles could end up doing a deal on Monday’s deadline day because their current focus is on a new central defender.

Elsewhere, The Secret Scout claims via X this morning that Palace actually made contact with Chelsea overnight about taking Chilwell on loan for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

Chelsea have told Chilwell he can leave in this mid-season window because he’s quite clearly surplus to requirements. Will he be able to land a late move to Selhurst Park before the window closes, though?
The noise around the left-back’s future had gone quiet recently, so it’s a relief to hear he could yet be on the move. Without a doubt, the Champions League winner has been harshly treated and deserves to be playing football somewhere.
Crystal Palace a great fit for Ben Chilwell
If this transfer deal happens, it could be smart for all parties involved.
In terms of Palace, they’ve needed competition and cover for Tyrick Mitchell at left-back for what feels like such a long time now. It’ll be a boost to Oliver Glasner’s squad if they bring in a 21-cap England international, even if it’s just on loan.
As for Chilwell, he simply needs any kind of transfer move to get back playing again. A Premier League home would be great, too. We could definitely see him suiting Glasner’s Palace set-up, whether that’s in a back four or as a wing-back in a back three.
West Ham wanted Chilwell from Chelsea earlier in the window, but Palace could be an outstanding last-minute suitor.
