Chelsea should start thinking about alternatives to Mathys Tel if they are not already.
Chelsea hope to sign Mathys Tel before the transfer window closes next Monday, with the winger now keen to leave Bayern Munich.
However, Tel does not seem too keen to join Chelsea, who already possess a lot of quality out wide.
Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho is another attacker the Blues have considered, but there is also another player they should be looking at.
Chelsea should make move for Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram
Chelsea were thought to have had an interest in Marcus Thuram before his move from Borussia Monchengladbach to Inter Milan back in 2023.
In fact, it was claimed that Thuram actually turned down the chance to join Chelsea.
Since joining Inter, Thuram has only played as a centre-forward, but the France international has plenty of experience on the left flank. In his career, he has made more than 90 appearances there.
Marcus Thuram’s positions | Total times played there |
Centre-forward | 176 |
Left winger | 92 |
Right winger | 6 |
Second striker | 1 |
Enzo Maresca would surely welcome that versatility, though, with Nicolas Jackson struggling up front at the minute and Christopher Nkunku’s future uncertain.
Marcus Thuram ideal for the Premier League
Thuram’s stats at Inter are not bad at all. This season, the former Gladbach man has scored 13 goals in 22 Serie A appearances, while he has also registered four assists. Last term, Thuram also managed the same number of goals but having played more games, of course.
Marcus Thuram’s seasons at Inter Milan | Serie A Appearances | Goals | Assists |
2024/25 | 22 | 13 | 4 |
2023/24 | 35 | 13 | 7 |
Total | 56 | 26 | 11 |
In a team that are more offensive than Simone Inzaghi’s side, Thuram probably has the potential to do even better than the above.
Of course, there is no guarantee that he can carry over his success in Serie A to the Premier League, but the France forward looks a perfect fit for the English top flight.
At 6’4″, Thuram is a giant. When Chelsea played Inter Milan in pre-season, Maresca’s defence could not handle Thuram. At 27, he would also bring some much-needed experience to this young Chelsea squad.
Thuram may not want to leave Italy, the place where he was actually born, while Inter will not appreciate an offer for one of their best players arriving so late in the transfer window. But as Chelsea continue to search for attacking reinforcements, it is certainly worth asking the question.
