A top journalist has revealed exactly who Ruben Amorim plans to target as his next signing at Manchester United.
With just four days left in the January transfer window, United have been uncharacteristically quiet in the market, as they are yet to announce any new players.
Denmark international Patrick Dorgu is expected to be Amorim’s first signing as United manager, after reports suggested the Premier League club agreed a deal with French side Lecce for an initial fee of £25 million.
With the signing of Dorgu now almost finished, United fans have started questioning who next could come to Old Trafford and one journalist has revealed exactly what they should expect.
Since joining United, Amorim has led his side to eight wins across 17 matches, scoring 32 goals across the matches.
But Amorim clearly is looking for his team to find the net more regularly, as he is reportedly prioritising bringing a new striker to the club, according to The Athletic’s Manchester United live Q+A session.
During the Q+A One fan asked if there were any clear positions that Amorim would be targeting next, and if the links with Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres were true.
Replying to the question, journalist Laurie Whitwell wrote: “A striker to run in behind. Gyokeres would fit the bill of course.”
However, fans hoping that Gyokeres, or another striker, could join in the final days of the January transfer window will be disappointed after Whitwell confirmed in another answer that a new striker will be the number one priority in the summer.
This means that United will have to maintain faith in young striker Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee for the remainder of the season.
Across 71 appearances for United, Hojlund has scored just 23 goals in 71 appearances across all competitions, and has managed just two in 18 Premier League appearances this season.
Zirkzee, who joined United last summer from Serie A side Bologna, has also failed to impress so far this season, managing only four goals across his 33 appearances for his new team.
Therefore it comes as no surprise that Amorim would be keen to bring a new centre forward to the club in the summer, and who better than his former star Sporting player?
