The January transfer window is approaching its final days, and for Manchester United, there is still a lot of work to be done.
The Red Devils could still be one of Europe’s busiest clubs before next Monday’s transfer deadline. Sir Jim Ratcliffe is poised to sign off on multiple deals, both incomings and outgoings.
As we prepare for the final three days in the window, here is a round-up of everything that’s happening involving Manchester United.
Reason for Patrick Dorgu’s medical delay revealed
Manchester United agreed a deal to sign Patrick Dorgu from Lecce days ago but the wing-back has remained in Italy ever since. The reason for the defender’s delayed journey to England has now been revealed.
United agreed to Dorgu staying with Lecce for their upcoming Serie A clash against Parma. Dorgu will fly to Carrington on Saturday to undergo his medical, and all being well, complete his £25 million (€30 million) transfer.
Mathys Tel expected to sign for one of two clubs
Although Mathys Tel’s preference is to play for Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, the 19-year-old is expected to accept a transfer elsewhere.
Al-Ahli have withdrawn from the race to sign Tel because they suspect he is heading to either Spurs, who have agreed a £50 million (€60 million) deal with Bayern Munich, or to Aston Villa.
Gregor Kobel option to replace Andre Onana
United are rumoured to be interested in Gregor Kobel. The Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper has been a long-term target and is a player who could replace Andre Onana.
If they pursue a deal, the Red Devils will likely face competition from Chelsea, who are looking for a replacement for the struggling Robert Sanchez.
Ayden Heaven first in
The Arsenal youth star rejected the chance to stay with the Gunners and is due to have his medical with United later this weekend.
Outgoings still expected before Deadline Day
It is no secret — before United can bring anyone else in, they must get rid of at least one high-profile player — ideally one with homegrown status — so expect some movement the other way before Monday night.
Barcelona’s move for Marcus Rashford depends on Ansu Fati
Marcus Rashford’s future continues to be the subject of intense speculation.
Will he go, won’t he go? — The truth is, no one knows — not even the player himself.
While it’s probably true Rashford would love to join Barcelona, a deal is incredibly complicated due to his salary and the Spanish side’s finances.
Ajax could potentially have a say in what happens with Rashford between now and Deadline Day though. The Dutch giants want to sign Ansu Fati after Wolves refused to cut Carlos Forbs’ loan short.
Should Fati make the switch to the Eredivisie, Barcelona will then have room in their squad to pursue Rashford… It’s never going to be as simple as it sounds, though.
Ruben Amorim against Alejandro Garnacho sale
Although he cannot completely rule out Alejandro Garnacho leaving before Deadline Day, it is clear Amorim wants the Argentine to stay and be part of his plans going forward.
Amorim admitted he is ‘really happy’ with Garnacho; hinting he doesn’t want United’s owners to sell him this window.
Tyrell Malacia in Benfica talks
Tyrell Malacia had an awful match against FCSB in the Europa League on Thursday night. Booked inside the first 10 minutes, the 25-year-old was hauled off at halftime for Garnacho.
Way down in Amorim’s pecking order and unlikely to be given many more chances, Malacia has emerged as a target for Benfica. The Portuguese club are in talks to sign the United full-back due to Niklas Beste potentially moving to Freiburg.
