Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has shared his thoughts on why the party lost the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in an interview on Kessben TV on Friday, January 31, 2025, Mr. Boadu explained that the NPP failed to meet the expectations of ordinary Ghanaians. According to him, the party focused too much on rewarding delegates with gifts and money but neglected the general electorate, which led to voter dissatisfaction and apathy.
He stated that during the party’s internal elections, delegates received expensive items such as refrigerators, televisions, and large sums of money. However, during the general elections, the ordinary Ghanaian voter was left out. He argued that this unfair treatment made many people angry and discouraged them from voting for the NPP or even participating in the elections at all.
Explaining further, he said, “You give a fridge, TV, plus GHC5000 to someone I live in the same house with because they are a delegate, but when it’s time for the general elections, you come and tell me to go out and vote? The way I would slap you, you wouldn’t dare come near me again.”
His remarks clearly show the frustrations of many voters who felt abandoned by the party after supporting it in previous elections. He believes this dissatisfaction contributed significantly to the NPP’s defeat.
John Boadu’s comments add to the ongoing discussions about the party’s performance in the 2024 elections and the need for the NPP to reflect on its mistakes if it hopes to regain the trust of the electorate in the 2028 elections.
