The former Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr. Kwabena Kokofu, has voiced his disappointment with President John Mahama’s appointment of COP Nathan Kofi Boakye (retired) as Director of Security Operations at the Presidency.
This comes after President Mahama announced four appointments to his government’s National Security team on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. The appointees included former Chief of Staff Prosper Douglas Bani, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Abdul-Osman Razak, Charles Kipo, and COP Nathan Kofi Boakye.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo program, Dr. Kokofu specifically criticized the appointment of COP Nathan Kofi Boakye, suggesting that the President should have looked beyond individuals’ names or positions.
“When we talk about security, it shouldn’t just be about the names and the positions people occupy,” he remarked. “I’m a bit disappointed, but the President knows what he’s doing.”
Despite his criticism, Dr. Kokofu revealed that he believed COP Nathan Kofi Boakye deserved a more prominent role. However, he was quick to acknowledge that success in any position depends on performance rather than the size or prestige of the role.
“I thought his role would be bigger than that. However, the work—the ability to do it well—doesn’t depend on how big or small the role is. It all depends on how good you are at your job,” he added.
Dr. Kokofu also reflected on the unrest that followed the elections, expressing surprise at the chaos but commending the nation’s security personnel for their effectiveness.
“I believe in the nation’s security institutions, and I know that when they commit to their work, they deliver. So, it was surprising to see chaos erupt even after a loser conceded defeat,” he further stated.
