The Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has called on Ghanaian public officers and institutions to prioritize governance compliance, uphold integrity, and advance the rule of law as the nation enters a new chapter of democratic leadership.
In a New Year statement issued on January 17, 2025, CHRAJ highlighted Ghana’s peaceful presidential and parliamentary elections and celebrated the historic election of the nation’s first female Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang.
The Commission extended its congratulations to her and President John Dramani Mahama on their decisive victory, as well as to the re-elected Speaker of the Ninth Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
CHRAJ emphasized the importance of adherence to governance principles, specifically referencing the Code of Conduct for Public Officers outlined in Chapter 24 of the 1992 Constitution.
“The Code of Conduct is not merely aspirational; it is a constitutional mandate,” the Commission stated.
The Commission also reiterated its exclusive jurisdiction to investigate breaches of the Code of Conduct and called for the urgent passage of the Conduct of Public Officers Bill to strengthen accountability mechanisms.
Furthermore, CHRAJ urged the government and all citizens to uphold the rights of vulnerable groups and to ensure that human rights remain central to socio-economic development.
“With a collective resolve, we can continue to build a thriving democratic society where human rights, good governance, and the rule of law are upheld,” the Commission concluded.
