Meet The Ghanaian Public Figures Who Are Not Full Ghanaian

Share

In Ghana, some celebrities have captured the hearts of many, especially the youth, but you might be surprised to learn that not all of them are fully Ghanaian, or even Ghanaian at all.

While some have deep roots in the country, they were either born elsewhere or have parents from different nationalities, which grants them allegiance to other countries.

Despite this, these individuals—our beloved actors, musicians, and public figures—are widely recognized as Ghanaians. You may have even noticed their last names, skin tone, or other features and wondered about their true origins.

Here are six celebrities in Ghana with surprising backgrounds:

6. Jerry John Rawlings

Rawlings, born on June 22, 1947, in Accra, Ghana, had a mixed heritage. His mother, Victoria Agbotui, was an Anlo Ewe from Dzelukope in Keta, Ghana, while his father, James Ramsey John, was a British chemist from Scotland.

5. Majid Michel.

Although born in Accra, Majid Michel has a Ghanaian mother and a Lebanese father, making his background distinctly multi-national.

4. Van Vicker.

Van Vicker’s parents were of different nationalities. He was born to a Ghanaian/Liberian mother and a Dutch father, giving him a unique cultural blend.

3. Nadia Buari.

Born in Takoradi, Ghana, Nadia Buari has a Ghanaian mother and a Lebanese father, which gives her a dual heritage.

2. Yvonne Okoro.

Yvonne Okoro’s background is equally diverse. She was born to a Nigerian father and a Ghanaian mother, making her a blend of both Nigerian and Ghanaian cultures.

1. Frank Artus.

Frank Artus, a well-known Ghanaian actor, is actually Liberian by birth. Born in Montserrado County, Liberia, to Liberian parents, he is a full citizen of Liberia.

These celebrities are beloved by many in Ghana, despite their varied origins, proving that nationality and heritage can sometimes be more complex than what we assume.
