Hajia Samira Bawumia, Ghana’s Second Lady, has rejected the divisive tribal tactics reportedly used by the National Democratic Congress (NDC), reaffirming her position as a Fulani woman who belongs in Ghana’s political sphere as reported by MyNewsGH on Thursday, November 21, 2024.
Speaking passionately to a crowd just days before the December elections, Samira called on Ghanaians to reject the use of ethnicity as a political tool and unite behind her husband, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Her comments come amid rising political tensions, with accusations of tribalism clouding what many hoped would be an election focused on issues rather than division.
“If the NDC believes that resorting to tribal politics is the way to win the hearts of Ghanaians, then they have no business holding power,” Samira said “I am a Fulani woman, and I have every right to be here. Ghana is my home just as much as it is theirs.”
The Second Lady expressed her frustration with the focus on her ethnicity instead of her qualifications and contributions. “Instead of questioning my ability to contribute meaningfully, they attack my character.
Why not talk about my credibility or my work?” she asked, receiving resounding applause from the audience.
Samira Bawumia has become a respected figure in Ghanaian politics, known for her advocacy in education and women’s empowerment.
Her remarks were not only a defence of her personal and professional achievements but also a call for national unity.
She urged voters to focus on the key issues, stating, “This election is not about where you come from or who your ancestors are. It’s about competence, vision, and the future we want for our children.”
Samira praised her husband’s leadership, saying, “My husband, Dr. Bawumia, has shown that he is ready to lead this country with integrity and purpose. Let’s not allow anyone to distract us with tribalism.”
