The political class is facing a backlash on social media after a National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) disclosed how much Parliament spends per sitting during emergency recall.
Speaker Alban Bagbin adjourned the House indefinitely, citing the absence of the NPP MPs, which prevented Parliament from reaching the required quorum for decision-making.
The recall session had been convened at the request of the NPP to address urgent national matters. However, the failure of their MPs to attend the session prompted strong criticism from the NDC caucus.
In a post by Accra-based GHone TV on its verified Facebook, Murtala Mohammed, the Tamale Central Member of Parliament disclosed that the Legislature loses over GH¢1 million per sitting to emergency sitting.
The staggering revelation has caused massive uproar on social media, with many of the citizens highlighting the importance of accountability. With the worsening economic conditions of the country, Ghanaians feel this is not the best way to spend the scarce resources of the country.
“This is very bad for the poor taxpayers……. Ghana really is bleeding profusely,” Bash Banor commented.
“NPP is causing financial loss to the nation,” Lord K Moses added.
Others have called for the amendment of the 1992 Constitution to reflect the realities of modern times. Proposers of this school of thought firmly believe that the Constitution of the country must be adjusted to prevent some of these actions which do not inure to the benefit of the taxpayer.
“Why must it be so? Where does this money go? We a need to amend the constitution radically, like never before”, Edward Abanga Remarked.
