The National Democratic Congress Presidential Candidate, John Dramani Mahama, has reacted to the statue unveiled by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his honour.
During his one-day ‘Thank You’ tour in the Western Region on Wednesday, November 7, 2024, the President unveiled a statue at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital.
Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah explained that the statue was created to honour the president for the various initiatives he has undertaken.
Reacting to the development, Mahama criticised Akufo-Addo for erecting a statue in his own honour. He argued that the President should have allowed Ghanaians to be the ones to erect the statue as a way of recognising and celebrating his accomplishments.
He added that the president’s decision to erect a statue is a display of his insensitivity to the plight of ordinary Ghanaians, especially in the face of ongoing hardships.
“When Akufo-Addo came, he begged Ghanaians to try him and we did but now see what we are facing. And he doesn’t care, he has even built and unveiled a statue of himself in Takoradi. Have you heard that before? As a president you have to be humble and allow people to praise you and not the other way around.
“You go to universities demanding them to give you doctorate titles as a president. Instead of allowing people to praise and honor you after your tenure, you have forced them to confer doctorates on you when you don’t need it. Right now, they have nothing left to offer…,” he said.
