The flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has defended his commitment to digitalisation as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic progress, responding to criticism from opposition leaders who argue his focus on technology sidelines urgent economic issues.

During the launch of the National Credit Scoring System, a new digital initiative designed to boost credit access for Ghanaians, Dr. Bawumia clarified that digitalisation is essential to solving, not avoiding, Ghana’s economic challenges.

He emphasised that these initiatives are critical for expanding financial access, enhancing transparency, and promoting economic inclusion across the country.

“Digitalisation is not about avoiding the issues; it is about solving them,” Dr. Bawumia stated, pushing back against critiques from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

He argued that integrating digital technology is vital for building an efficient, inclusive economic system that benefits Ghanaians from all walks of life.

Pointing to mobile money interoperability as a transformative example, Dr. Bawumia described how this digital milestone has significantly expanded financial inclusion.

“I remember when I made a statement in 2017 that with the implementation of mobile money interoperability, every Ghanaian will be able to have a bank account.

“When I said that, many people did not understand it. They even made jokes about it. They did not think it was possible. But today we have made it possible,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia envisions a modern, tech-driven Ghanaian economy that supports immediate financial accessibility while laying the foundation for sustained growth.

He argues that digitalisation not only addresses current economic challenges but also secures a robust future for Ghana, benefiting citizens across all sectors.
