Following consultations, Speaker Alban Bagbin called a parliamentary session today in response to a petition from the NPP caucus. This session followed an earlier indefinite adjournment due to disruptions in parliament, which began when the NDC caucus took seats on the majority side. The NPP caucus contested this seating arrangement, insisting they should occupy that section and subsequently staged a walkout, leading the Speaker to adjourn the session.
Today marked another unusual chapter in Ghana’s parliamentary history. Despite initially requesting the house be recalled, the NPP caucus did not attend, leaving the chamber filled solely with the NDC members and the Speaker. With no quorum, the Speaker had no choice but to adjourn the session indefinitely once more, as parliamentary proceedings could not move forward without the NPP’s presence.
Hon. Kennedy Agyapong in an interview with the media after the speaker’s declaration explained why the NPP caucus was absent in the house. He stated the NPP caucus were in a meeting to put together their submissions for sitting which delayed their arrival and resulted in the speakers decision to adjourn the house indefinitely. An official statement from the leader of the NPP caucus has been received.
In a post sighted on the official twitter page of Citi FM is an interview scene with Alexander Afenyo-Markin, leader of the NPP caucus following the adjournment of the house indefinitely. In his speech, he boldly stated that he will lead the caucus to recall parliament. The MP’s determine the business of parliament and not the speaker. Watch the full video via the link below.
