Steven Gerrard couldn’t help but reignite an old rivalry with Gary Neville during a video call with former Liverpool teammate Jamie Carragher.
The iconic captain joined a FaceTime call with the Sky Sports pundit while filming for ‘The Overlap on Tour’. Gerrard, who climbed the ranks of the Liverpool academy before taking over from Sami Hyypia as captain, was well aware of the rivalry between Manchester United and the Anfield club.
The midfielder had some memorable moments in their clashes with the Red Devils and was even sent off in his last match against United, following an incident with midfielder Ander Herrera. As part of the new season of ‘The Overlap’, Roy Keane, Ian Wright, Neville, and Carragher embarked on a European adventure.
In the latest episode, they made a stop in Istanbul, Turkey, to visit one of the most significant stadiums in both the Liverpool defender and Gerrard’s career as Liverpool staged a comeback to beat AC Milan on penalties in the Champions League final.
At the start of the call, Carragher begins: “There he is, there’s the main fella. Can you tell where we are? You can tell, don’t you?” To which Gerrard replies: “Oh yeah.”
The Bootle-born defender pans to show Neville and Keane, saying: “I’ve brought a couple of mates along just to make it even better.” Neville chimed in, but Gerrard couldn’t resist a jibe, responding: “Oh for —– sake. Roy, you can stay where you are, Gary you can —- off.”
The former United defender sparked laughter when he asked who managed to get Paolo Maldini’s shirt, suggesting that both Carragher and Gerrard had snagged the Italian defender’s match strip. However, Gerrard clarified that he had actually picked up Andriy Shevchenko’s shirt.
The banter continued as Gerrard teased Carragher about potentially selling Maldini’s shirt from the 2005 final. Carragher retorted with a reference to Gerrard’s lucrative contract as Al-Ettifaq manager, saying: “I’m not at that stage now (selling the shirt). We might get there but there’s no chance of you needing to sell anything being over there (in Saudi Arabia),”
