Former Ghana School of Law Director, Kwaku Ansa-Asare, has praised Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, following Bagbin’s recent press briefing on Wednesday, November 6, 2024. Bagbin’s address came as he reconvened Parliament for a session today, November 7, where he discussed ongoing issues concerning recent disputes in the House.
In his statement to the press, Speaker Bagbin voiced concerns over what he described as a joint effort by the Executive and Judiciary to diminish Parliament’s authority, warning that this interference could weaken both the institution and Ghana’s democratic principles.
Kwaku Ansa-Asare, commenting on these remarks during an interview on Onua TV’s Maakye show with host Captain Smart, expressed agreement with Bagbin’s criticisms, noting that blind loyalty and sycophancy are stalling the country’s progress. According to Ansa-Asare, those in power often overlook flaws in governance out of self-interest.
Ansa-Asare praised Bagbin’s boldness in addressing the Judiciary’s perceived encroachment on parliamentary matters, remarking, “What is holding us back as a nation is sycophancy and blind loyalty. We refuse to acknowledge problems even when they are clear.”
He went on to say that such a stance, as Bagbin took, should have been championed by more leaders well before this issue arose, pointing out that Parliament and the Judiciary are independent bodies. Ansa-Asare expressed frustration at seeing some senior lawyers endorse the Supreme Court’s involvement in parliamentary issues, stating that this endorsement has only added to confusion within the legal community.
“I have always believed the Supreme Court has no business intervening in the workings of Parliament, yet some senior members of the bar commend the Court’s actions. This inconsistency creates confusion for the judges,” he added.
