Ruben Amorim and Sporting won on Friday night against Estrela Amadora, a crushing 5-1 victory.
Viktor Gyokeres scored four goals in a 5-1 win to show Ruben Amorim what he will be missing out on when he leaves for Manchester United.
Ruben Amorim was named as Manchester United’s new head coach, and is set to start on November 11, once his commitments at Sporting are complete.
Following the victory, Amorim has been speaking openly as promised and he has had a lot to say, quotes via Mais Futebol…
Ruben Amorim thanks Sporting fans
“Since the situation arose, we have felt different.
“I understand the anger of some fans, the disappointment, but that’s life, I was moved by the ovation.”
He also responded when asked about the statement from United and his current club coming on a Sporting matchday.
“Clubs are companies and they have to present all the situations that affect the clubs. The statements make everything more difficult but there are things that we cannot control. I managed to help the team win.”
Ruben Amorim told Sporting this would be his final season
Ruben Amorim laid the context for his departure by explaining that he was going to leave Sporting next summer regardless. And by this point the United job would not likely be open.
“At the beginning of the season I had a conversation with the president and Hugo Viana and I said that whatever happened, this was my last season at Sporting.”
Taking a decision now
“It was not possible to accept at the end of the season, I had three days to decide whether I wanted to stay or leave Sporting.”
United made clear to Amorim they were not going to wait or appoint an interim until the end of the season. This was the right call as they got their man.
Amorim made clear he had rejected teams before, when the conditions or project was not right.
“It is not the first time that I have had my termination clause paid by a club.
“I gave everything I had for the club, it’s really hard for me to leave here. It’s gotten to the point where I have to decide whether to stay or go, because in six months I could regret it. It was now or never and I took that step.
“I changed my mind several times about the decision I was going to make. I’m going to take my staff to Manchester, that was always one of the conditions.”
Amorim spoke earlier in the week about a desire to test himself out of his comfort zone, being the reason for wanting to step away.
Choosing Manchester United
Amorim is determined to succeed at Old Trafford and says this is the offer he was waiting for: “There is no Sporting fan who wanted me to stay until the end of the season more than I did. But it wasn’t possible.
“Some people say it’s for money. It’s not. Other clubs were prepared to pay three times more and I refused. This is the club I wanted.”
“Coaching Man. United is very challenging, there were people who said I couldn’t do it, just like they said when I came to Sporting.”
No Sporting buys… in January
“I’m not going to buy any players from Sporting in January. It was the best period of my life, everyone knows how important they were to me. I understand that the fans are divided when I leave in the middle of a season that could be historic.
