Ruben Amorim reveals the real reason he is ready to join Manchester United from Sporting

Ruben Amorim has been coy about his move to Manchester United from Sporting.

Yet there is not a day where he can escape the media questions about his role, as he continues in the short-term in Portugal.

Ruben Amorim has pledged to fully explain his decision after Sporting’s match on Friday night against Estrela Amadora.

Yet there is no denying Amorim is set to take the Manchester United job once all the formalities of negotiations between clubs are complete.

Manchester United chose Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s successor after sacking the Dutchman amid a poor start to the season.

Ruben Amorim motivation

Manchester United are offering Ruben Amorim a big salary increase as part of his new role, which is to be expected.

Yet Ruben Amorim’s motivation to leave Sporting is about far more than money. He recognises the need to test himself.

Amorim has won two league titles at Sporting, making history as the only manager to do so at the club since 1953.

Quoted via Mais Futebol, he explained that stepping out of his comfort zone was the key motivation in making a change.

Amorim said: “I think all coaches need that. I think that in everyone’s life, and in yours [journalists] too, there are times when we are doing very well in life but we are missing something or we want something or to prove something.

“And we have to take a step forward in things that destabilise us, that we don’t know if it will work or not, if we are or are not ruining what is good about us, but I think everyone feels that.

“You and coaches go through the same thing in your life.”

Amorim taking responsibility

Ruben Amorim was asked earlier in the week if he was trading stability at Sporting for instability at Manchester United.

And while he did not comment specifically on Manchester United, he made clear that any decision he makes will ultimately be his, and he will live or die by it.

Amorim’s latest words show his motivation, the Manchester United job is one he feels he needs to take, to test himself and see what he is able to achieve.

While he is a Sporting legend, Amorim’s commitment is not unbreakable. He won three titles with Benfica as a player, before taking the job to manage at their Lisbon rivals, with great success.

This was a big risk, and one where he has succeeded. Amorim backs himself, and his own confidence will be important in the Manchester United pressure-cauldron.
