Legendary Black Stars striker, Prince Tagoe has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to make sure their aim of implementing the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the local league becomes a reality.

He explained persistent complaints about poor officiating in the league have made it a boring commodity for football fans in the country.

Tagoe advised the GFA officials to make sure any financial support they get from the Federation of International Football (FIFA) regarding the VAR would be used for its purpose to make the technology available in the country.

“I think the VAR is a good thing because the way we complain about the officiating all the time makes the league boring. I believe if the VAR is adopted it will help us in terms of officiating issues concerning goals, fouls and offsides.

“I hope the meeting between the GFA and the FIFA officials will be successful. The GFA officials should utilize the funds that would be given by FIFA to support the initiative appropriately and not squander it. They should do everything possible to grab the opportunity to make the league attractive,” he said while speaking on Angel TV.

This comes after the GFA announced that their representatives will be meeting with FIFA officials from October 31 to November 1, 2024.

The meeting is geared towards examining the country’s readiness to adopt the technology.

FIFA’s delegation for the meeting will be led by Inokuchi Takaaki and Michael Bailey, who are experts in VAR and its related operational processes.

Attendees from the GFA will include Alex Kotey, head of Referees and VAR team leader in Ghana; Emmanuel Aglago, VAR instructor and Marian Mensah, head of legal affairs at the GFA.
