Ruud van Nistelrooy is set to take charge as Manchester United’s interim manager against Leicester City on Wednesday evening.
Following the announcement of Erik ten Hag being sacked at Manchester United, the club announced that assistant manager and club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy would take temporary charge.
Van Nistelrooy was among the potential replacements for Ten Hag, but Ruben Amorim has agreed to join United and the club are now closing in on his appointment after agreeing to trigger his release clause at Sporting Lisbon.
United chiefs were initially hopeful that Amorim will take charge against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, but it has now been reported that Amorim will fly to England this weekend.
If that is the case, Van Nistelrooy will likely also be in the Old Trafford dugout on Sunday.
However, it is unclear whether he has a future at the club once Amorim takes control.
Ruud van Nistelrooy expects to leave Man United
United are still in talks with Sporting to finalise the appointment of Amorim, and one of the only hurdles remaining in the process is the payment for his backroom staff.
If United agree to pay an extra fee for Amorim’s staff, it could spell bad news for the likes of Van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake – who both joined Ten Hag’s backroom staff in the summer.
According to iNews, Van Nistelrooy “expects to leave” United once Amorim’s appointment is official.
That is because the Dutchman believes Amorim will “almost certainly” bring over his existing staff from Portugal to support him.
Carlos Fernandes and Adelio Candido have followed Amorim to his past three managerial jobs, and are expected to make the trip to Manchester with the 39-year-old.
Still space for Ruud van Nistelrooy at Man United?
Van Nistelrooy sent a passionate message before taking charge of United against Leicester, and he is still adored by the Old Trafford fanbase.

Van Nistelrooy has previous experience as a full-time manager and may want to pursue a senior job of his own once Amorim arrives.
But United players have praised Van Nistelrooy’s impact this season and he has particularly worked well with United’s striker department.
With the young duo of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee still trying to improve and grow, a coaching job for Van Nistelrooy should not be out of the question.
However, that decision will ultimately come down to Amorim, who has no experience working with Van Nistelrooy and could decide on his own striker coach.
