Some players just remain forever remembered as the ‘partner in crime’ with certain managers and Viktor Gyokeres has made a fine case to be that for Ruben Amorim.
If Sporting Lisbon’s 3-1 win vs CD Nacional turns out to be Amorim’s last game as Sporting manager, then it would be a poetic result.
That’s because Gyokeres came off the bench to score two goals to make it 16 goals in 15 appearances in all competitions this season.
He is doing a fine job of following up from his previous year when he struck 43 times in 50 games and stands as the biggest success story of Amorim’s time in charge at Sporting.
Will that continue without Amorim, though? As Sporting announced United’s intention to pay Amorim’s release clause, that question might be answered soon-
Viktor Gyokeres on Ruben Amorim to Man Utd
Regardless of what the result of this game was, the coverage was dominated by Amorim’s potential move to Old Trafford at the end of it.
United intend to have Amorim in charge for the Chelsea game and for that happen, things need to move quickly.
Gyokeres was asked his thoughts on the development and he refused to get drawn into the speculation, instead focusing on the here and now.
He said: “Well now he’s here so I’m focusing on that. It’s not something I know but it’s also not about me. At the moment he’s here. We’ll see what happens. It’s not something I put my energy on.”
The whole club seems determined to block out the noise while the deal is not official as Gyokeres’ words weren’t remarkably different from Amorim’s thoughts on Man Utd move.
The win vs Nacional sends them to the final four of the cup and with the next game soon on November 1st, all sides would prefer clarity on the future.
Gyokeres is too obvious to ignore for Man Utd
Erik ten Hag was widely criticised for going to his ‘tried and tested’ when it came to moves in the transfer market with Antony becoming a personification of his failings.
However, in Gyokeres’ case, he is becoming too obvious a target for Man Utd to ignore.

His goalscoring record in an Amorim team is borderline video game level and he comes with prior English football experience since he broke through at Coventry City.
He has done it at the highest level of the Champions League and United have historically bought well from Sporting.
Add to that United’s obvious striker woes for the senior team, and the Swedish hitman becomes a no-brainer signing for the next summer.
