In a charged pre-election atmosphere in the Ashanti Region, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has issued a stern warning to retired Commissioner of Police Nathan Kofi Boakye. Speaking passionately at a campaign event in Kumasi, Chairman Wontumi expressed concerns about the potential for unrest on December 7th, the day of Ghana’s 2024 general elections, and specifically pointed fingers at Kofi Boakye.

Chairman Wontumi did not mince words, saying, “Send this warning to Kofi Boakye: if any bad thing happens in Ashanti Region during the election, I will hold you responsible. Even if there is chaos at just one polling station, I will deal with you. Listen, if you do anything with your boys to bring chaos on election day, I will sack you from this region.”

His comments have since sparked a whirlwind of responses from Ghanaians who have seen or heard about the video. While some supporters echo Wontumi’s concerns about maintaining order during the elections, others feel his remarks have crossed a line, questioning the grounds on which he threatens a retired police officer. “Chairman Wontumi talks as if the whole Ashanti Region belongs to him,” one resident commented, emphasizing that no one individual should wield power over a region in such a way.

This confrontation between Wontumi and Boakye, two prominent figures in the Ashanti Region, has stirred curiosity about what might be fueling the strong words. Some believe Wontumi’s stance is rooted in a desire to protect his party’s interests in the NPP stronghold, while others suggest there may be a personal history between the two men. A few voices have even questioned whether Chairman Wontumi’s message is aimed at preempting actions he fears could sway election results or dampen voter turnout in key areas.

Nathan Kofi Boakye, respected for his long-standing service in law enforcement, has yet to publicly respond to Wontumi’s remarks. Known for his disciplined and often understated approach, it remains to be seen whether Boakye will engage directly or let the statements stand unchallenged.

With the December 7th elections drawing closer, tensions and rhetoric are likely to intensify. Ghanaians in the Ashanti Region, as elsewhere, await a peaceful process, with many hoping that leaders on all sides will work together to ensure an orderly and fair election day.
