Virgil van Dijk has given an update on talks over a new Liverpool contract – as he aimed a dig at Arsenal over their injury list.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk started the 2-2 draw against Arsenal at centre-back alongside Ibrahima Konate.

The Dutchman scored the Reds’ first equaliser at the Emirates Stadium, heading in from yards out following Luis Diaz’s flick-on.

Mohamed Salah, who is out of contract next summer like Van Dijk, scored for Liverpool in the second half.

There has been much speculation about the future of the pair and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is in the same position with his contract.

Reports have claimed that Van Dijk is closer to signing a new deal than his two Liverpool team-mates, but the player himself had not publicly commented prior to the Arsenal draw.

But speaking to Sky Sports, he spoke about his contract situation.

He said: “Listen, I’m very calm. I’ve mentioned it many times before – let’s see what happens at the end of the season.

“I’m enjoying my football. I’m feeling very good physically and mentally – I’m in a good place. Nothing more can be said.

“I just want to keep enjoying the game because it’s a beautiful game that we play and that I play as well.”

He also aimed a dig at Arsenal over their current injury list, with Martin Odegaard and Riccardo Calafiori their absentees prior to the Liverpool draw.

However, Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber both returned to start the match – and Van Dijk made light of this when asked about potential injuries suffered by Timber and Gabriel Magalhaes at the Emirates Stadium and whether that affected Liverpool’s approach.

“Another player got injured?” he asked. “Wow. I think they only had two injuries today, didn’t they? So obviously they played a very, very strong team.

“You know, it’s part of the game. We were obviously pushing and I think deserved to score the equaliser.”
