A conflict resolution and peacebuilding expert, Emmanuel Bombande, has dismissed a recent Reuters report suggesting that northern Ghana has become a logistical and medical base for Islamist militants involved in Burkina Faso’s conflict.
According to a report by graphic.com.gh, he made these remarks in an interview on Joy FM on October 25, 2024.
He described the report as ‘completely sensational and over-exaggerated’ and urged the public to ignore such reports and rather focus on constructive partnerships with security agencies.
Emmanuel Bombande also argued that such reports often originate from misunderstandings by outsiders who question why Ghana has avoided jihadist attacks.
He explained that Ghanaian security agencies, despite facing significant challenges, are collaborating with local communities, supported by initiatives like the “See Something, Say Something” campaign by Ghana’s National Security, which has heightened public awareness about terrorism threats and encouraged civilian collaboration with security forces.
He stressed the need for the public to continue supporting security agencies and encouraged Civil Society Organisations and local communities to remain engaged in safeguarding the nation.
A report by Reuters on October 24, 2024, indicated that Islamist militants fighting in Burkina Faso are discreetly using Ghana’s north as a logistical and medical rear base to sustain their insurgency, a move that could help them expand their footprints in West Africa.
It further noted that the sources, who include security officials and regional diplomats, said Ghanaian authorities appeared to have turned a blind eye to the insurgents crossing over from neighbouring Burkina Faso to stock up on food, fuel, and even explosives, as well as getting injured fighters treated in hospitals.
