‘Give local players the chance in the Black Stars’

Share

Former Black Stars defender Habib Mohammed has stated local players should be given the opportunity in the senior national team as he feels the foreign-based players are not committed enough.

He is currently not playing actively anymore and was part of the few local players that made Ghana’s final squad for their first ever FIFA World Cup in 2006 in Germany.

Then with King Faisal, Habib gave a very good account of himself at the Mundial when handed the opportunity having played 180 minutes in total.

Speaking in a recent interview on Kumasi-based Kessben FM, the ex- Molde FK and Ankaragücü full-back has questioned the commitment of foreign-based players in the Black Stars and believes the constant inclusion of local players will make the team much more stronger and competitive.

“Local players must be regular in the Black Stars. We should ensure we get local players in every Black Stars call up. What has been the commitment level these foreign players?”

“They give their all when given the chance because of where they are coming from. We should at least give 30% Black Stars slot to local players.”

The Black Stars are currently winless in the ongoing 2025 AFCON qualifiers after four matches and is looking very unlikely they will seek a spot in Morocco next year.
