The Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has touted his government’s achievements in the education sector, particularly regarding the conditions of service and welfare of teachers in the country.

In an interview with GBC on Friday, October 25, 2024, NAPO, as he is affectionately known, highlighted the major improvements in the standard of living for teachers, compared to the previous National Democratic Congress administration, stating that all teachers are currently better paid.

He explained that every teacher, including those who are newly employed, enjoys a salary three times higher than they previously did.

“Before we came, NDC had started some laptops for teachers initiative and they were promised 30,000 laptops [sic]. We heard the cacophony of noises that the institution of those laptops were into party communications, it never went to teachers. Compare that to the supply of over about 500,000 laptops to teachers as we speak.

“Every single indicator… every teacher starts on a salary three times higher than previously before we came into power. We started a professional development announcer that we have paid, we started with 1,200, and has now been increased to 2,400. We gave teachers support workers 600 allowance that has gone to 800,” he said.

NAPO asserted that their government has prioritized the educational sector more than any previous administration in the country.

“Every single scale of the teacher…, we introduced the teacher logistics part for new teachers recruited in the Ghana Education Service that never existed under NDC, a comprehensive teacher policy, the first of its kind ever in this country that never existed under the NDC, so for a teacher we did better, for students we did 300-400 times better,” he added.
