The race to be crowned the 2024 MotoGP World Champion continues to rage between Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Ducati and Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati Lenovo. Martin, who won the sprint race and finished second behind Marc Marquez in the Grand Prix at Phillip Island this past weekend, holds a 20-point advantage over Bagnaia at the top of the standings.

“It was a great weekend, doing the pole position, winning [on Saturday in the sprint] and being on the podium [on Sunday in the GP],” said Martin. “I wanted to win. I tried my best. But actually the feeling wasn’t like [Saturday].

“I was struggling to put the power on the ground so I couldn’t make a gap to Pecco [Bagnaia] and Marc, who both improved from yesterday, even though my race was quite strong. In the middle of the race, I started to feel a bit better but then I almost crashed in corner 1. Pecco overtook me, but straight away I was attacking back.”

Martin added, “I tried to stay in first position for the last few laps, but Marc had nothing to lose, so it was much more difficult from my side to battle. I tried to be close, but he had something else. Maybe not in terms of speed, but in terms of the risk that he can take, or the risk that I can take.”

Bagnaia, meanwhile, believes his Championship hopes continue to be affected by his contentious crash with Alex Marquez in Aragon back in September.

“I think it’s like it was in Indonesia,” the Italian explained. “We are continuing recovering, losing, recovering, losing. Our performance is fairly balanced. Unluckily the contact that made me crash with Alex Marquez is the fact that is right now weighing more on the championship.

“But we have to be focused and move onto the next ones with a good confidence knowing that they are tracks where I am very fast.”

There have been four previous Thailand MotoGP events, with Marc Marquez winning in 2018 and 2019, while the 2022 and 2023 races were won by Miguel Oliveira and Martin respectively.
