Alban Bagbin Will Go Down In The History Of Ghana As The Worst Speaker Of Parliament

Tensions are rising within Ghana’s political sphere as Owusu Bempah, the Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), launched a scathing attack on the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin. Owusu Bempah criticized Bagbin’s recent decision to interpret parliamentary law, a role Bempah argues is reserved for the Supreme Court.

Speaking to journalists on the premises of Parliament, Owusu Bempah expressed his frustration over Bagbin’s actions, claiming the Speaker had overstepped his bounds by attempting to declare certain seats in Parliament vacant. “Who has the power to interpret the law better than the Supreme Court of Ghana?” Bempah asked, his voice laden with anger. “Alban Bagbin is just a Speaker of Parliament. He has no right to interpret the law and declare those seats vacant. Trust me, Alban Bagbin will go down in history as the worst Speaker of Parliament in Ghana’s history.”

Owusu Bempah’s strong words come at a time when Bagbin’s tenure as Speaker is nearing its end. With only weeks left before Bagbin vacates the seat, Bempah expressed surprise that the Speaker would make such bold legal interpretations. “It surprises me that he is trying to do this now,” he remarked, alluding to the upcoming changes in Parliament’s leadership.

The conflict stems from an ongoing legal dispute involving NPP Members of Parliament. According to Owusu Bempah, he and other NPP supporters were present at Parliament House to support their MPs and ensure fairness, but were denied entry by security personnel. This added to the frustration surrounding the day’s events.

The Speaker’s actions have sparked widespread debate across the country. Some Ghanaians argue that Owusu Bempah’s harsh criticisms are politically motivated, given his position in the NPP and the fact that the issue directly affects his party’s MPs. “Owusu Bempah is only saying this because the case doesn’t favor his NPP colleagues,” one observer noted. Others, however, share Bempah’s concerns, arguing that Alban Bagbin’s moves risk damaging the integrity of Ghana’s Parliament.

As the controversy unfolds, Ghanaians are left questioning the balance of power between Parliament and the judiciary, and how this power struggle will shape the nation’s political future.
