According to a report from ModernGhana. Ghana’s Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed his disappointment with Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin. In a recent interview with Peace FM, the Effutu MP shared his frustrations, stating that despite his respect for the Speaker, he has been betrayed on several occasions.
Afenyo-Markin revealed that even though he has private conversations with the Speaker, Bagbin often acts differently in the Chamber. “I have a lot of respect for the Speaker, but since I became Majority Leader, he has let me down several times,” he said.
He noted that this was not the case during the leadership of Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu and former Minority leaders like Haruna Iddrisu and Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka. “I’ve tried to handle the situation without confrontation, but it’s been disheartening,” he added.
Afenyo-Markin explained that despite his efforts to present his arguments in the Chamber, the Speaker often interrupts him. “There have been times when I tried to engage him on issues, but he would interrupt me. I had to control myself on Thursday to avoid a confrontation,” he said.
The NDC Minority Caucus has refused to back down despite the Supreme Court’s ruling suspending Speaker Bagbin’s decision. They claim to still be the Majority in Parliament following the removal of four of their members and vow to protect their majority status.
