Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has finally responded to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Supreme Court’s ruling, which set aside his decision to declare four parliamentary seats vacant. In a Facebook post, Mr. Bagbin wrote, “God bless our homeland Ghana and make it great and strong, beyond any single individual or institution.”
This comment comes in the wake of the Supreme Court’s directive on Friday, October 18, instructing the Speaker to halt the implementation of his ruling that had declared the four seats vacant. The ruling has sparked widespread debate, with legal experts offering differing views on two key issues: whether the Speaker has the constitutional authority, under Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution, to declare parliamentary seats vacant, and whether the Supreme Court has the power to override the Speaker’s decision.
As speculation continues over how Speaker Bagbin will respond, his Facebook post, made just hours before Parliament is set to reconvene, has heightened interest. Some believe the Speaker may challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling, while others think he will comply. His concluding remark, “…beyond any single individual or institution,” suggests that the unfolding events will be crucial for the relationship between Parliament and the judiciary.
