A member of the national communications team of the National Democratic Congress, E.A. Mettle-Nunoo Jnr, hit back at President Akufo-Addo over his call for the flagbearer of the NDC, John Dramani Mahama, to engage the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, in a debate.

Mettle-Nunoo questioned the relevance of the call, quizzing its substance and importance to the impending elections.

He noted on JoyNews that Dr. Bawumia has been inconsistent with his position on the economy and that any decision by the NDC to engage would be a validation of his inconsistency.

“What will Mahama debate Bawumia about? Why should Mahama debate Bawumia and what will be the focus of the debate? This is someone who has been inconsistent and illogical with his statements on the economy,” he said.

Mettle-Nunoo also stated that the comments by President Akufo-Addo are indicative of his realization that the NPP is going to lose the election.

He stated that President Akufo-Addo is clutching at straws as he knows that Ghanaians will vote out the NPP in the coming elections.

“When Akufo-Addo talks today, you can feel that he senses the wind of change that is blowing. He knows that the NPP is going to lose the elections, so he is just throwing things out there to unsettle the John Mahama campaign, but it’s not going to work. John Mahama is going to win the elections, and we will hold the NPP accountable,” he said.

President Akufo-Addo, on October 15, 2024, challenged John Mahama to debate the presidential candidate of his party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Speaking on the issue of the presidential debate at a campaign event in Tamale on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, Akufo-Addo accused Mahama of running away.

“Why is Mahama running away from the debate? Bawumia says he is ready for the debate any day. So, why is Mahama running away?” the president asked.

He pointed out that a debate would help Ghanaians make a decision on which of the presidential candidates can be trusted.

“We need someone who is reliable, whose words can be trusted, who is consistent and clear-minded. That is why some of us are saying, in fact, the majority of us are saying, we want Mahama and Bawumia to debate the issues in our country,” he said.
