Lawyers for Archbishop Duncan Williams Threaten to Sue GhanaCelebrities.com for Defamatory Publication

Share

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, founder and presiding archbishop of Action Chapel International, is preparing to take legal action against GhanaCelebrities.com for what his legal team describes as a defamatory publication.

The report in question, which surfaced weeks ago, claimed that the Archbishop had expressed concerns about the possibility of Ghana having a Muslim president, specifically Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the current Vice President and a presidential aspirant for the upcoming elections.

According to the controversial article published by GhanaCelebrities.com, the Archbishop’s son, Daniel Duncan-Williams, reportedly shared a private conversation on social media that allegedly involved his father expressing these concerns. The publication claimed that during a conference call with other pastors, Archbishop Duncan-Williams voiced his reservations about Dr. Bawumia’s potential presidency due to his Muslim faith.

This report has since sparked public debate, drawing mixed reactions from the Ghanaian populace, especially given the high regard in which Archbishop Duncan-Williams is held in both the Christian and larger interfaith communities. The article has, however, been labeled by the Archbishop’s legal team as defamatory and a deliberate attempt to tarnish his reputation and create religious tension in the country.

In response, the lawyers representing Archbishop Duncan-Williams have issued a strongly worded letter to GhanaCelebrities.com, demanding a retraction of the publication and an apology. The legal team argues that the content of the article is not only misleading but also misrepresents private family matters in a manner designed to cause public outrage.

The letter further indicated that should the website fail to comply with these demands, they would proceed with legal action for

defamation, seeking damages and legal costs.

This legal threat comes at a time when Ghana’s political landscape is charged with discussions surrounding religious tolerance, given Dr. Bawumia’s political prominence and the possibility of him becoming the nation’s first Muslim president.

Archbishop Duncan-Williams has yet to make a public statement directly addressing the situation, but his legal team’s actions suggest that they view the claims made by GhanaCelebrities.com as both harmful and baseless.
