We Are Not Going To Fight In Parliament- NDC MPs

Share

The recent development in the political landscape of the country has been a source of concern to many Ghanaians. The power shift in Parliament has compelled many Ghanaians to wonder what will happen in Parliament on Tuesday.

In a significant legal development, the Supreme Court of Ghana has issued a stay of execution on Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin’s ruling, which declared the seats of four Members of Parliament (MPs) vacant.

The affected MPs are Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central).

This decision halts the implementation of the Speaker’s ruling pending further legal review.

The ruling has sparked a political storm as both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have insisted on occupying the Majority bench on Tuesday.

To address the stay of execution by the apex court, the NDC caucus held a press conference in Accra on Sunday, October 21.

Honourable Ato Forsen, the leader of the caucus assured Ghanaians that his side will not fight in Parliament on Tuesday, stressing that they would use the “Majority Status” to fight corruption in the Akufo Addo-led administration which is in its last embers.

In a video shared on Facebook by Accra-based Citi FM, Ato Forsen further promised that the NDC caucus will capitalize on the recent development to introduce a Private Member’s Bill to scrap some nausea taxes like the E-levy, COVID levy, emissions levy and others.

Meanwhile, the NDC group in Parliament insisted that it does not know of any existing laws which empower the Judiciary to overturn a ruling made by the Speaker of Parliament, adding that the NDC legislators will not comply with the ruling.
