In a discussion on TV3’s Newday program today 17th October, 2024, about the 4 parliamentary seats that have to be declared vacant, legal expert Beatrice Annan strongly criticized the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for its approach to constitutional interpretation.
She highlighted the inconsistencies in how the NPP handles legal precedents, pointing out the party’s reliance on court decisions to justify their political actions. According to Annan, the NPP is undermining constitutional principles by using convenient interpretations to benefit their political agenda.
She also expressed concerns about the growing interference in independent institutions, warning that this could set a dangerous precedent for the future.
Reacting to Majority Leader Afenyo-Markin’s decisions to seek an interpretation in the matter at the supreme court, she said “Afenyo-Markin’s going to court is like a child looking for a mother for breast milk. The court has become a very convenient excuse for the NPP, go let’s get a unanimous decision”
She concluded that the laws about declaring seats vacant when the MPs chose to go independent are clear and non ambiguous, as such needs no further interpretation from court. Watch the video below
