Aggie Beever-Jones takes her chance to impress onlooking Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman in comfortable Champions League win

The young England forward broke the deadlock in the Netherlands, with Maika Hamano and Guro Reiten also getting on the scoresheet

When Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman made the short journey from her Netherlands home to watch Chelsea take on Twente in the Champions League group stage, she might’ve expected to have a few England stars to keep an eye on. But rotation from Blues head coach Sonia Bompastor, and Lauren James’ withdrawal from the starting XI, meant that young forward Aggie Beever-Jones had her national team coach’s undivided attention for the entire 90 minutes on Thursday and she took that opportunity as her goal set Chelsea on their way to a comfortable 3-1 victory.

There were just seven minutes on the clock when Beever-Jones’ goal looped over the head of Olivia Clark via a deflection but it was luck she would certainly earn in a hard-working performance. Maika Hamano, another of Chelsea’s stand-out players on the night, doubled that lead with an audacious effort from range and it was three just past the hour, when Guro Reiten scored from the spot after coming on at the break.

With nothing to lose, Twente started to go for it more and were able to capitalise on a little bit of dysfunction brought into the Chelsea team by a flurry of second half substitutions. However, Nikee van Dijk’s strike with just over 20 minutes to go would be nothing more than a consolation for the hosts after a generally dominant performance from the English champions.

GOAL rates Chelsea’s players from De Grolsch Veste…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Kadeisha Buchanan Chelsea Women 2024-25

Zecira Musovic (5/10):

Should’ve done better with Twente’s goal after getting a strong hand to the shot.

Eve Perisset (7/10):

Great game from someone who surprisingly doesn’t get a lot of minutes.

Kadeisha Buchanan (6/10):

Won possession back more than any other player in a solid 45 minutes before being subbed off at the break.

Nathalie Bjorn (6/10):

Had some shaky moments at times and then had to adjust to a new centre-back partner in the second half, though did have some nice moments in an up and down display.

Ashley Lawrence (6/10):

Good and consistent on both sides of the ball.

Midfield

Maika Hamano Chelsea Women 2024-25

Oriane Jean-Francois (8/10):

Battled brilliantly in midfield in what was an impressive full debut for her new club.

Wieke Kaptein (7/10):

Back at her former club, she reminded the fans of the quality she delivered in red for three superb seasons.

Maika Hamano (8/10):

Showcased her technical skill in spades as she pulled the strings in attack.

Attack

Aggie Beever-Jones Chelsea Women 2024-25

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (8/10):

A brilliantly lively performance, especially considering she was only drafted into the line-up at short notice. Gave her marker a nightmare for a good hour.

Aggie Beever-Jones (8/10):

Led the line well and worked very hard. Got a slice of fortune with her goal but deserved to be on the scoresheet.

Sandy Baltimore (6/10):

Had some nice moments without stealing the show before coming off at half time.

Subs & Manager

Sonia Bompastor Chelsea Women 2024

Maelys Mpome (6/10):

Settled into the game relatively well considering she was coming in at centre-back.

Guro Reiten (6/10):

Cool as ice from the spot to make it 3-0.

Erin Cuthbert (6/10):

Ensured the energy stayed high in midfield though didn’t help Chelsea control the closing stages as much as they would’ve liked.

Mayra Ramirez (7/10):

Made an immediate impact, winning a penalty within minutes of coming on.

Julia Bartel (6/10):

Showed some neat passing on her Chelsea debut.

Sonia Bompastor (7/10):

Got the balance of rotation just right, giving opportunities to players who needed minutes while also ensuring the team was sharp and strong enough to get a result. Didn’t take her foot off the gas with the subs either, which was positive, but this was another game Chelsea lost a little bit of control in as it came to a close.
